What must I do to be saved?

Are you a Christian? Do you go to church anywhere?

A more important question than that: If you were to die today, are you a 100% sure that you will go to heaven?

Yes or no, read along to know how you can be a 100% sure that you will go to heaven when you die.

The Bible way to Heaven

Lot of people believe that any one who lives a good life will go to heaven.

But the Bible says:

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (Romans 3:10)

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;(Romans 3:23)

So basically, all of us(you, me, everybody) have sinned and come short of God’s standard.

It also says in Romans 6:23:

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

A wage is something which you earn for your work. So the wages of sin is death according to the Bible. But death here doesn’t only refer to a physical death of the body, but also the second death in the lake of fire which is called hell.

It says in Revelations 21:8:

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

So according to this verse, the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable,…, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone(aka hell).  I’ve lied before, and probably you’ve lied before, and in fact everybody has lied before. Therefore we don’t have to commit an awful sin to have our part in hell. Even liars deserve hell.

And the most horrible thing about hell, is that it is eternal. We are to be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Then that means everybody is going to hell right?

No.

The Bible says in Romans 5:8

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

So basically Jesus Christ, God who was manifest in the flesh,(1 Timothy 3:16) came to this earth as a human being to take the punishment that we deserve, so that we may not face death in hell. For that, He lived a perfect life, a sinless life, despite the fact that he was tempted with all temptations like us.

For the Bible says in Hebrews 4:15:

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

When Jesus was in this earth, he was hated by the Pharisees and the Jews, because he rebuked against the evil things that they were doing.

For Jesus said in John 7:7:

The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

Because of this, the Jews wanted the king to crucify Jesus. Despite the king telling them that he couldn’t find any fault in Jesus, the Jews wanted him dead badly, that they were willing to take the curse for shedding innocent blood.

Jesus was spit on the face, crowned with thorns, buffeted and smote with the palms of their hands and was mocked saying

“Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?” (Matthew 26:68)

He was then nailed to the cross, and at that point, the Bible says in 1 Peter 2:24:

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

He died not for our sins only, but of the whole world.

And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:2)

Every sin that I’ve done, every sin that you’ve done, and every sin that everybody has done in the whole world, was as if Jesus had done it.

After he died on the cross, they took his body and buried it in the tomb.

And when he died, because he bore all our sins, his soul went down to hell and was tormented.

And 3 days and 3 nights later, he rose again from the dead.

His soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. (Acts 2:31)

He showed himself to his disciples, and over 500 people, before ascending into heaven, and now sits on the right hand of God.

But…

…there is something that we must do to be saved. In the Bible, a prisoner asks that question to the apostles in Acts 16:30-31

Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

and that’s it.

He didn’t say, “join a church and you’ll be saved”, “get baptized and you’ll be saved”, “live a good life and you’ll be saved”, or “repent of your sins and you’ll be saved”.  He only said to believe.

Trust Christ alone as your saviour

Eternal security

The most famous verse in the Bible, John 3:16, says

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Everlasting means eternal. Something which lasts forever.

Also Jesus says in John 6:47

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

So at the moment someone believes on Jesus Christ, they have everlasting life. It is not a doubt of whether you may or may not go to heaven when you. You have everlasting life.

And also, no one can lose it by living a bad life or committing a major sin, for the Bible says in John 10:28:

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

And Jesus even said:

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. (John 11:26)

which means that although our flesh dies in this earth, our soul wont see death in hell if we believe on Jesus Christ.

The moment you’re saved, you’re passed from death unto life.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (John 5:24)

Salvation is a gift

The bible says that eternal life is a gift, and it cannot be earned by our works. For it says in Ephesians 2:8-9.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Who pays for a gift? The person giving it, or the person receiving it? The person giving it right. Then what must the person receiving do in order to earn that gift? Nothing. It’s for free.

The Bible makes it clear that we don’t earn our way to heaven. If we were supposed to live a sinless life to earn our way to heaven, then none of us would be going. The only way that we get the gift of eternal life, is by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ as our only saviour.

A question then arises in our minds: Must we repent of our sins to be saved?

The answer is: NO

I’m not telling you that you shouldn’t repent of your sins after you’re saved, but, repenting of your sins is not a part of salvation. If you believe on Jesus, but still do not turn away from sin, you’re still going to heaven.

Here is a short documentary on repentance in salvation.

The Bible says in Romans 4:5:

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Your salvation is not based on how you live your life. It’s not based on who you are. It’s not based on what religion you belong to. It is only based on where you put your FAITH.

For the Bible says in Romans 1:16:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Salvation is a gift. If you have to repent of your sins to be saved, it is not a gift. If you have to be baptized to be saved, it is not a gift.

The Bible says in Matthew 7:22-23

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

If you’re adding your baptism or your “repentance of sin” to your faith to get you to heaven, one day God is going to say to you “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity“.

Cause once he knows you, he knows you.

The Bible says in Galatians 3:10-11

For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

So if you are trusting to be justified under the law, you better keep all of the law.

Jesus is THE way

To sum all of it, Jesus says in John 14:6:

I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

So maybe you were born a Catholic, or a Muslim, or a Hindu, or a Buddhist, or an atheist, but according to the Bible, if you don’t believe that Jesus Christ is THE way, THE truth, and THE life, you are going to hell when you die.

But, at the end of the day, you have the choice to either believe or not believe the word of God, the Bible, and its gospel.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.(John 1:1)

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?(John 11:26)

What is your reply?

All to say this:

What must I do to be saved?
  1. Admit you are a sinner
  2. Realize the penalty for sin
  3. Believe that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again for you
  4. Trust Christ ALONE as your saviour
Salvation:
  • Is by grace through faith(Faith + nothing)
  • Eternal security(Once saved, always saved)

Do you believe?

Prayer
Dear Jesus,

I know that I am a sinner.
I know I deserve to go to hell
But I believe you died on the cross
for me and rose again. Please save me
right now and give me eternal life.
I'm not trusting in my works. I'm not
trusting in my religion.
I'm only trusting in You. Amen

If you prayed this prayer from your heart, according to the Bible you are saved, and you now have eternal life:)
